John & Gwen Laker work from their kennels at Blean near, Canterbury, in Kent. They first became involved with Staffords in 1977, to show them. Over a period of time, they became committed to helping unwanted dogs, so in 1990 they became part of the South-Eastern rescue team.
Over the years, the original rescuers have left, mostly becoming too ill to carry on. The stalwart, Joanna Mason left to form her own group, so the Lakers now run the group, with a lot of help from friends.
The work can be rewarding, but so often heartbreaking, to find so many Staffords being badly abused, many from ignorance. So many dogs are in need of Veterinary work, so the raising of funds is vital, the group is always looking for help in this field. Also, we do get older dogs in, cast aside in favour of a youngster. It is hard to re-home them, but they do have a lot of love to give, the Lakers have taken some in over the years.
Henry is fifteen, Lucy is twelve, they are delightful companions and filled a huge gap in our lives.
We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all who have donated so generously to stafford rescue, including Mrs J. Connelly and M. and P. Rangecroft. THANK YOU.
